All that Glitters: The Society of Gilders

December 13, 2022 - April 16, 2023 10:00 AM

Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens
The Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens is pleased to announce our newest exhibition, All that Glitters: The Society of Gilders, an installation in partnership with The Society of Gilders, an international and professional association devoted to the art and craft of gilding. This exhibition will run December 13, 2022, to April 16, 2023. Gilding or “gilt,” is a decorative technique for applying fine gold leaf or powder to solid surfaces such as wood, stone, or metal to give a thin coating of gold. Precious objects, art, and architectural elements have been gilded by ancient Greek, Roman, Chinese, and Egyptian cultures for centuries. This knowledge further transitioned through influential European art periods and can be seen in innumerable master works of art. The Polasek Museum is delighted to partner with The Society of Gilders for this glorious look at this historic medium. This exhibition aims to reflect The Society of Gilders’ mission, “to preserve traditional gilding skills and techniques and to promote the highest standards in the practice of gilding.” Artists have not only been encouraged to submit finished pieces, but also works in progress. This exhibition is supported by United Arts of Central Florida and the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs.

Exhibition: "Lamps and Lighting—Tiffany and His Contemporaries"

March 07, 2023 - March 31, 2024 9:30 AM

The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art
Few designers did more to bring art into the home than Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933), and few of Tiffany’s incredibly varied products did more in this regard than his lamps. Tiffany had been interested in lighting since his days as a decorator, but the rapid adoption of electricity in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century created unprecedented opportunities to marry technology and beautiful design for a much larger group of consumers. The new installation of "Lamps and Lighting—Tiffany and His Contemporaries" showcases some of Tiffany’s most innovative designs for lamps and sets a context for their production and design. John Dikeman’s workbench and lamp molds, recent acquisitions by the Morse, illustrate the process used in the creation of a lamp. Dikeman (1882–1967) was the head of Tiffany Studios lamp department until it closed in the 1930s.

George Nock: Breaking Barriers

May 09, 2023 - August 20, 2023

Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens
The Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Garden is to host a retrospective exhibition of the artwork of sculptor George Nock (American, 1946-2020). The artist, a former NFL running back, celebrated the excellence inherent in natural forms and the accomplishments of exceptional figures in their respective pursuits. The spirit of music and movement resonant in Nock’s sculpted and painted depictions of musicians, dancers, athletes, warriors, and animals. Nock’s career was tragically cut short by his diagnosis with the COVID-19 virus, passing in 2020. The exhibition will feature figural bronze sculpture, paintings, and drawings, including the clay formed maquettes for the recently unveiled sculpture for Orlando’s Lorna Doone Park: Barrier Breakers (2020). Commissioned by the Edward E. Haddock Jr. Family Foundation, the Barrier Breakers monument honors the players involved in the first interracial little league baseball game played in the south. Artwork will be available for purchase with proceeds to benefit the George & Mary Nock Foundation and the hosting museum.
