French Moderns: Monet to Matisse Exhibition

February 01, 2025 - June 22, 2025

Explore one of the most pivotal and dynamic periods in art history when the internationally touring French Moderns: Monet to Matisse, 1850–1950 exhibition makes its first and only South/Central Florida stop at the Vero Beach Museum of Art (VBMA), February 1 through June 22. The exhibition is organized by Lisa Small, Senior Curator of European Art, and Richard Aste, former Curator of European Art, Brooklyn Museum. Featuring 59 paintings and sculptures from the Brooklyn Museum’s esteemed collection of European art, French Moderns showcases some of the most renowned names in Modern Art—Pierre Bonnard, Gustave Caillebotte, Paul Cézanne, Marc Chagall, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Gustave Courbet, Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, Gabriele Münter, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Auguste Rodin, and others—and how they experimented with bold, expressive styles such as Realism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Symbolism, Fauvism, Cubism, and Surrealism. It also highlights artists like Lajos Tihanyi, Aleksandr Yakovlev, and Giovanni Boldini, who settled in Paris and made significant contributions to the art scene, each hailing from Hungary, Russia, and Italy, respectively. “What I find most inspiring about this exhibition is how the selected artworks demonstrate such breadth in major art movements,” says VBMA Chief Curator Caitlin Swindell. “With a vast range in styles, French Moderns: Monet to Matisse, 1850-1950 illustrates how artists often push boundaries with their work.” The exhibition offers outstanding works of art for various interests in style and subject matter across four thematic groupings: Landscape, Still Life, Portraits and Figures, and The Body. For instance, in the Landscape section, visitors will find Alfred Sisley’s 1876 painting, an Impressionist work with its wispy skies and partially submerged trees rendered through seemingly quick and visible brushstrokes. This work contrasts with another landscape in the section, Yves Tanguy’s 1946 painting, Dress of the Morning—a surreal outdoor scene depicting a barren field with amorphous shapes in the foreground, perhaps figures or otherworldly creatures. Entry to French Moderns: Monet to Matisse, 1850–1950, is free with VBMA admission. Museum docents offer a free guided tour at 2 p.m. daily. Additionally, VBMA offers a full slate of exhibition-inspired programs such as lectures, dance and musical performances, film screenings, craft cocktail evenings, and Art Talks. Visit vbmuseum.org for dates, times, and ticketing information. The Vero Beach Museum of Art is open seven days a week. It is located at 3001 Riverside Park Drive, Vero Beach, Florida, 32963. Directions: From I-95 (Exit 147), from U.S.1, and Indian River Boulevard, take State Road 60 east over the Merrill Barber Bridge to the beachside, and turn right at the first traffic light into Riverside Park. Well-Dressed: Artworks from the Permanent Collection

February 10, 2025 - September 14, 2025

This exhibition explores the intersection of fashion, identity, performance, and self-expression. Well-Dressed begins with portraits featuring individuals in various kinds of dress, often wearing colorful garments. Some clothing items, like the yellow dress in Joseph Stella’s painting Joy of Living, starkly contrast with their surroundings, while others, such as the photograph, Punzante by Argentinian artists Raúl Eduardo Stolkiner (known as RES) and Constanza Piaggio, emphasize pattern and materiality, presenting a woman adorned in a stole made entirely of wire. One section of the exhibition examines the concept of “collective dress,” highlighting works that portray groups of individuals wearing similar or identical outfits or uniforms. Another section focuses on the attire of dancers, performers, musicians, and actors. The final section showcases artworks that depict only clothing or accessories; pieces such as Michael Craig-Martin’s Untitled (Sunglasses) and Karen LaMonte’s Reclining Dress Absence function almost as surrogate portraits, allowing viewers to imagine whom they might represent. The exhibition is organized by the Vero Beach Museum of Art.

Timeless: Robert Farber’s Fashion Photography

February 10, 2025 - August 31, 2025

Vero Beach Museum of Art is pleased to present Timeless: Robert Farber’s Fashion Photography on view in the Stark Gallery from February 10 through August 31, 2025. This original exhibition is curated by the Vero Beach Museum of Art’s Chief Curator, Caitlin Swindell. Robert Farber (b. 1944) is a renowned photographer whose five-decade career spans both commercial and fine art photography. His diverse portfolio includes subjects ranging from fashion and portraiture to still life and landscapes, captured from around the world. This exhibition features two of his fashion-related series: “Vintage Fashion,” primarily drawn from his commercial work, and “Deterioration,” a series of fashion photographs transformed by the natural aging of their film transparencies. Over time, exposure to heat, humidity, and other environmental factors caused the film to react chemically, resulting in vivid, surreal distortions that give the images an unexpected, almost otherworldly quality. Farber, a self-taught artist, began his photography career in New York City in the 1970s. Since then, his work has appeared in major publications such as Vogue, GQ, Elle, and Vanity Fair. He photographed numerous editorial advertisements and commercials for major brands and companies such as Christian Dior, Bill Blass, Revlon, Bloomingdale’s, Marshall Fields, and Saks Fifth Avenue. Farber captured some of the most iconic models of his time, including Gia Carangi (often considered the first supermodel), Janice Dickinson, Apollonia van Ravenstein, Iman, Beverly Johnson, Carol Alt, Christie Brinkley, and Linda Evangelista. Many of these models appear in the works included in the exhibition, but in some cases, the aging of the original film has obscured or altered their features, transforming the images into abstract expressions of fashion and beauty. Timeless brings together these two fashion-related series for the first time in a museum exhibition, showcasing the breadth of Farber's work in this genre. The show highlights his creative vision, his collaboration with models and brands, and his ability to reflect on the passage of time—whether by referencing past styles or allowing time itself to shape the final image. The exhibition offers a unique perspective on the intersection of Farber's artistic and commercial work, exploring the lasting impact of his contributions to the world of fashion photography. About Robert Farber: "Robert sees the world through the eyes of a romantic, and he communicates by means of soft movement, flowing shapes, and pure nature. I usually associate Robert's images with romantic symbolism, more in keeping with the traditions of my own generation—antique pillars, steps, soft veils.”—Fashion Photographer Horst P. Horst (German American, 1906-1999) “Today there are tens of thousands of serious photographers seeking new interpretations of the beauty of the female form. There is but a handful whose work truly interests us by revealing different ways of seeing and understanding this beauty. Robert Farber is one of the very few who can delight and please us in this elusive approach to nature. From abstraction to realism, he reveals to us his love of the female form. His delightful and beautiful photographs offer a unique pleasure.”—Renowned Photographer Arnold Newman (American, 1918-2006) In addition to his work in fashion, Farber has created photography for a variety of major companies, including Paramount, Sony Electronics, and 20th Century Fox. A favorite artist of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, who brought Farber into Doubleday to publish his book By The Sea, 15 photography art books of his work have collectively sold over half a million copies. Throughout his career, his passion has extended beyond his fine art and commercial photography to mentoring and educating others in these fields. Farber has lectured at the Smithsonian Institution as well as universities and professional groups throughout the United States, Japan, Australia, and Europe. Among his accolades are numerous creative awards, the Photographer of the Year from the Photographic Manufacturers Association, and the ASP International Award from the Professional Photographers of America and the American Society of Photographers.
